รากศัพท์(Root)เป็นส่วนที่แสดงถึงความหมายพื้นฐานหรือความหมายหลักของคำ

Affixคือคำที่เติมเข้าไปข้างหน้าหรือหลังคำทำให้ความหมายของคำนั้นเปลี่ยนไปและจะช่วยให้รู้ความหมายของคำศัพท์ในภาษาอังกฤษเพิ่มขึ้นหรือยังสามารถรู้หน้าที่ Function ของคำนั้นๆได้จากการเติมเข้าไป

Affix มี 2 ชนิด คือ

1. prefix  ส่วนที่เติมเข้าไปข้างหน้า Root เรียกว่า Prefix 

              2.suffix  ส่วนที่เติมเข้าไปข้างหลัง Root เรียกว่า suffix

ตัวอย่างเช่น
